About the speakers

George Shaw is a Turner Prize–nominated artist based in Nottingham. He studied at Sheffield Polytechnic (1988–1989) and holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London. Working primarily in Humbrol enamel paint, his practice focuses on landscapes of the area where he grew up. His work has been acquired for major public and private collections internationally, including Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery; the British Council; the National Museum of Wales; Cincinnati Art Museum; the Olbricht Collection; and Tate.

David Alston is an arts professional, writer and curator based in Sheffield. He has held senior roles including Assistant Curator of the Ruskin Collection, Deputy Director for Arts at Sheffield City Council, Keeper of Art at the National Museum of Wales, Galleries Director at The Lowry, and Arts Director at the Arts Council of Wales. He has also chaired Sheffield Contemporary Art Forum and Yorkshire Artspace. He was awarded an MBE in 2020 for services to the arts.
