Applications for our autumn residency are now open.

The residency runs from 8 Sep to 31 Oct 2026.

The deadline for applications is 10am, Wed 15 Jul.

Testing Ground is our residency programme at Exchange Place Studios, offering intensive periods of creative experimentation for artists based in Sheffield.

The programme aims to provide ideal conditions for making, including studio space and a materials budget. Studio open days and group crits provide opportunities for artists to share their works-in-progress. 121s with invited curators support the artist in expanding their professional networks while a publication including a short commissioned essay documents the residency and provides a useful tool to help communicate their practice.

Each residency provides:

— 24/7 access to a large public-facing studio;

— £2,000 artist fee;

— £500 materials grant;

— Opportunity to share work in a crit;

— 121s and studio visits;

— Professional photography;

— Short commissioned essay;

— Limited edition publication;

— Public open days & closing event.

Eligibility
Applicants must be based in Sheffield (have an S postcode); be available to work onsite for a minimum of three days per week throughout the residency; and not be enrolled in full-time or part-time study for the duration of the residency. Ideally 2 of the days onsite per week would be weekdays.

Criteria
We welcome applications from artists working in any medium.

Applications will be assessed on the originality and distinctiveness of the artist's perspective and approach; how clearly the residency will support the artist to expand or develop their practice; the applicant's motivation for undertaking the residency at this stage in their career; and the potential impact on their future artistic and professional development.

We are looking to award the residency to an artist with a compelling and ambitious proposal that demonstrates curiosity, experimentation and a clear opportunity for growth.

Please note that we receive many brilliant applications which meet our selection criteria but can only offer one residency, we are sorry for any disappointment caused.
