Maud Haya-Baviera

Testing Ground #008

Testing Ground is our residency programme at Exchange Place, intended to provide an intensive period of creative experimentation for an artist based in Sheffield.

Our artist-in-residence for Sep/Oct 2026 is Maud Haya-Baviera, a multidisciplinary artist working primarily across video, photography and sculpture.

For the past five years, Maud’s work has drawn from and appropriated literary, cinematic, and historical materials. She is particularly interested in how existing narratives can be reimagined and subverted, producing new meanings and ways to perceive the world we live in. Alongside her individual practice, she is part of the Sheffield-based Heavy Water Collective with artists Victoria Lucas and Joanna Whittle.

For Testing Ground, Maud will use Sheffield’s ancient woodlands and the medieval castle remains behind Exchange Place as a starting point for new work, continuing an ongoing concern around ecological collapse and biodiversity loss. Experimenting with wood, concrete, clay, photography, video, and sound, she will test speculative and non-representational forms inspired by coppicing, pollarding, and the city’s buried ecological histories.

Through a series of public open days, you are welcome to visit Maud in the studio for a glimpse at her developing work and the chance to ask her questions.
